Some history

A pause in the way

After a 30 year career, in which he left track like administrator and manager in the Talamanca hotel, the Club Union, San Jose Palacio, among others, a health crisis was the excuse for Jorge Salgado to take the time to rethink his way.

Jorge Salgado `s life has been a constant arm and disarm, always involving hotel management. With a long career, built during years working for great hotel chains, he didn't think that retirement would arrive without even requesting it and without proposing it, but a health crisis forced him to leave his work, and although he recovered he would no longer be the same. "When someone gets sick and has the chance to recover, it begins to see life different, everything changes, and you even enjoy the problems". That is what problems mean for him; problems are opportunities that life gives to improve and to surpass the limitations.

That's how Salgado decided to turn his adversity into something positive, and started the far from easy task to open its own hotel.

Ever since he took the decision he knew that his success would be the result of a balanced combination between several factors, he would have to offer a high standard service, a differentiated and attractive product, and competitive prices, all these by applying all his knowledge acquired during so many years, but this time, in addition to be a personal project, he would be supported by his son. With only 21 years, he is the hotel manager, and according to Salgado, he not only has maturity and integrity to take the business, but also interest and facility to learn everything related to hotel management.

"I asked my son, Rafael, what he thought about the idea of opening a hotel, he agreed it would be a good investment, and that's how the idea was to make something simple where all schemes were broken".

Definitely Salgado obtained what he proposed, because if to break with the established was his goal, his hotel is an example. He used his house, that in spite of being one recent construction (14 years), it counts with elements that date from 1890's San Jose houses, because one of his hobbies is to recollect what he calls " San Jose 's firewood"; although that meant losing a space which he was used to.

"What makes it strange ( using my house as a hotel) , is that there is people that I don't know having lunch in my living room, or taking a coffee in the terrace, suddenly it stopped being my home, but you get used to it ".

Like home

Perhaps that home atmosphere that the hotel conserves is what catches the clients, something that I witnessed. While I waited for don Jorge in the lobby, I noticed that a woman came to the hotel with other persons , while she entered she  spoke about the hotel, its decoration, she took them to the kitchen, to the dining room, the garden, and other halls. By the correctness she spoke, I thought that she was the hostess, but for my surprise during the interview she walked by several times, and with a whisper don Jorge commented that he did not know that woman, that has seized the place "She once came to have lunch and since then she comes several times a the week with different friends and she always repeats the same routine ", commented Salgado. To make a joke about it I said that he should think hiring her for his public relations, in fact that is the type of publicity hotels and restaurants need but, how to obtain a client that becomes our spokesman? This depends only in the first time experience, hospitality is one very important part, but it's not only that, also aspects like food, atmosphere, and decoration influence, everything that are product offers. As a lesson we can't think we have prestige or a name and we can lay back because everything is done, but to be conscious that each client that visits us its new a challenge that we have to conquer

Bulk ideas

Details are found from its entrance to the smallest corner, most of it elaborated by his proprietor, who assures that his voluntary divorce with television left with time for his personal projects.

"Many years ago, I decided that its not worth it to waste time seated in an armchair in front of the television, for that reason during the nights or my free time I make glasswork such as tables, or I spend long time in the garden, doing what I like.".

He is a " San Jose's firewood " enthusiast, for about 30 years he collected doors, windows, walls, and other parts of 1890`s demolished. What he never suspected was that his hobbies would give the personality to the hotel he just opened. "When I began to buy the demolished pieces nobody appreciated it. It was very cheap and people used it like firewood, but now these pieces are not only difficult to find, but more valuable ".

An imagination class

A pair of contemporary gargoyles from the National Theater fit into an arc that shows the entrance Corteza Amarilla Art, Lodge and Spa, in Brasil of Mora... A project that fuses history, nature and life in the countryside with aesthetic unconditional valuation.

He didn't know what he was going to do with the jewels he collected, he just felt that his heart was broken if he didn't save the Costa Rican historical patrimony from the Tica fever to demolish any dusted structure and sometimes desolated by the lack of interest towards a concept of city. Jorge Salgado , a hotel manager, a well-known antique architectural lover and a glass artisan, had a Victorian dream under the warm shade of an accumulation of flower trees to which he called Corteza Amarilla Art, Lodge & Spa.

Since he was young, Salgado bought demolitions, every time he listened that a house was going to be demolished he appeared and offered to cover all the expenses and that's how he begun to fill of treasures more than one warehouse. He tells that before constructing the house where he recently inaugurated the hotel, he organized all the pieces in his brother's soccer field, to be able to visualize the inventory of how he will incorporate each part to that Victorian house with Caribbean flavor, Bonsai's gardens and a big cage of color birds.

The triumph after a serious health problem was the trigger for this hotel manager from Mora to initiate his customized historical project of hotel management and his art glass knowledge make him fill the spaces with glass tables, lamps in amber shades, litmuses and kaleidoscope designs with mirrors. Salgado expresses that he sits and he starts creating the designs at that moment, for that reason he could not give art classes, because "I could not give a class of imagination".

The interior details are meticulous; the windows have leaves that give the restaurant a spectacular shade. The paintings of some walls were done by Nella Salgado, everything ready to take your time and start discovering secrets.

Baroque, Art Deco and Victorian

When you enter the hotel reception there are two armchairs from the Lebanon cinema in each side, impossible to pass them inadvertent. Although Salgado talks about the project as fusion arquitecture for all the different old pieces that can be appreciated it in every corner, the sensation is as if they had taken that Victorian house in front of Pizza Hut in Paseo Colon and had put it intact between yellow branches.

It is impossible to make an inventory of all the wood puzzles' pieces, forged metals and cement in each corner from the 1800's. "I like what people refer as garbage. for me garbage has a historical value", says Salgado, while he refers to another memory from the house behind the French Alliance in San Jose .

The name of the hotel pays tribute to the arboreal variety present, and the rest plan.

The idea of the hotel, restaurant and Spa is to focus towards the person to person attention. It has 7 suites, a Spa with therapeutic specialties and the Essentia's restaurant, which is an adventure of fusion cooking between local and distant flavors.

In one side of the hall, plenty of art pieces, a wood stair of cedar prevails for the large rest that can almost become a mezzanine, which belongs to a San Jose house of 1892.

The presentation letter, besides the hundreds of history's centimeters, is to appreciate an alive and sunk nature in the edges of the family house.

The development of an idea kept, matured and planned between coffees and nostalgic conversations.

This new acquisition from Mora is a call to explorers of aesthetic and history, with flavors of hope to blow the candles to recover all that lost square meter under the development, and which produces sensations of desolation, in a city constructed with urban patches and pains.

In harmony with nature, the elegant surroundings of Corteza Amarilla Art Lodge and Spa provide an escape for those wanting to spend a few halcyon days in an enchanting setting.

The place is named after the vibrant yellow flowering trees found on the 4,500-square-meter property. Only about 15 minutes' drive from the pandemonium of downtown San José and the Juan Santamaría International Airport in Alajuela, northwest of the capital, the hotel is nestled between the towns of Santa Ana and Ciudad Colón, southwest of San José . With Santa Ana 's Forum, a mega

business complex home to many multinational companies, just four kilometers away, it is a convenient retreat for visiting businesspeople after a stressful day.

Corteza Amarilla certainly has a spa, but why call a hotel an "art lodge"? Well, the name reflects the incredible artistic and inventive talents of owner Jorge Salgado. After a career of more than 30 years in hotel management for some of Costa Rica 's most prestigious hotels, Salgado was forced to retire because of health reasons. So, he decided to convert his private home into a distinguished small hotel and restaurant.

Salgado's son, the charming young Rafael Salgado, is the property's general manager.

"My father reconstructed our house using his love of antiques, interior decorating and gardening and his knowledge of the hospitality business to create a dream come true," he said.

The decor reflects different cultures and periods, including art nouveau, deco, baroque and even a touch of Oriental. A fanatical antique collector for the past 30 years, the elder Salgado has

been prowling demolition sites scavenging anything he could find. Old timber, wrought-iron sconces, pieces of intricately carved wood and doorways, some dating back to the 1800s, have all found a home here.

A mahogany staircase once covered with more than 20 layers of paint rises in splendor from the dining room, and among the restored furniture is a row of seats from the old Cine Líbano, San José 's first cinema. Antique gadgets intermingle with the ferns and potted plants, while a collection of knickknacks once discarded as rubbish can be seen in every nook and cranny. Illuminating it all, Salgado's stained-glass lamps are a colorful inspiration and a visual feast.

In the indoor patio area, the gift shop's intriguing collection of old and new is displayed around a lily pond, the domain of a large, multicolored, ceramic frog. Souvenir hunters and antique collectors will find an eclectic collection of stained-glass and ceramic artwork, leather goods, woodwork and bric-a-brac.

Guests can relax in the library, enjoy the large collection of art books and table games, or use the Internet. The Fountain of Life, a genuine 17th-century Italian fountain, is the centerpiece of the garden with its abundance of tropical plants, orchids and shade trees.

In the spa, visitors can rejuvenate, relax, revitalize and pamper themselves. Spa services offered by Harmony Center professionals include the use of holistic treatments, massages, aromatherapy and stress management techniques. A special Anti-Stress Package is available.

Guest rooms overlook the garden and consist of 11 junior and two master suites, decorated with the same attention to detail as the rest of the lodge. Salgado's multicolored mosaic tiles embellish the stunning bathrooms and flawless, highly polished wood floors - again made from recycled wood - and old prints adorning the walls reiterate the owner's flair for interior decorating.

All suites are equipped with cable TV, wireless Internet, minibar, coffeemaker, air conditioning and ceiling fan. Each room has a cozy sitting area with a sofa bed. The only difference between the junior and master suites is that the latter offers a king-size instead of a queen-size bed, is slightly larger and has French doors that open onto a private patio.

Rates for both junior and master suites are $120 double occupancy, including tax and breakfast; add $12 for an additional person, with no charge for children under 12, except for breakfast.
